Three schools entered a lockout status Feb. 9 in District 49. The lockouts lasted almost 40 minutes, as police activity developed in the POWER Zone area of District 49.
Starting at 8 a.m., Ridgeview Elementary School went a into lockout status, followed by Skyview Middle School at 8:03 a.m. and Vista Ridge High School at 8:07 a.m. At 8:28 a.m., Imagine Classical Academy Indigo Ranch was the fourth school to enter a lockout status.
The status decisions were made at the request of the Colorado Springs Police Department, in coordination with the District 49 safety and security team. CSPD alerted district officials that they were responding to several reports of a man walking around with a rifle in the neighborhood.
The person originally reported as walking around the neighborhood as having a rifle was identified as a Vista Ridge High School student. The student was carrying a soft-shell case containing Vista Ridge High School marching band color guard flags and there is no danger to the community.
At Ridgeview Elementary School, where the school day begins at 8:50 a.m., parents and students that were arriving were escorted by staff into the school. District 49 safety and security and Colorado Springs Police were stationed on the street near the school monitoring activity. Buses with children in route to Ridgeview Elementary School were held in safe at locations away from the area and dropped students off after the situation was cleared.
At 8:39 a.m. all four school lockout statutes were lifted, after CSPD officers reported the situation clear and the areas safe. Students continued their classes as scheduled.
