FHS and SCHS Junior ROTC Cadets Honor Memory of District 49 Graduate

The 10th annual “Dane Balcon Drill Competition,” was held Feb 11 at Falcon High School. The competition is held each year to honor Sand Creek High School graduate and Falcon High School JROTC cadet, Dane Balcon, who was killed in action while serving in the U.S Army on Sept. 5, 2007 in Balad, Iraq.

This year’s competition included 11 JROTC teams from around the state, with Harrison High School from Harrison School District 2 in Colorado Springs, taking the overall team title.

Each year, Balcon’s mother, Dr. Carla Sizer, attends the event to personally thank the cadets and their families for participating. “I believe in my heart if you forget their names, if you don’t see their faces, if you don’t hear their names, people will forget, and I think that District 49 and all of the ROTC detachments have done a fabulous job
in keeping his legacy alive,” said Sizer.
