Staff, Students Honored for Leading the Way in District 49

Individuals in D49 aspire every day to make our educational community the “Best Choice to Learn, Work and Lead.” Before the monthly board of education work session March 27, one staff member and two students were celebrated during Fantastic 49 for leading in notable ways.

Emma Passig, FHS ROTC cadet, is recognized during Fantastic 49 March 27 for earning a pilot training scholarship.

The festivities were kicked off by honoring Christine Logsdon, social studies teacher at Skyview Middle School. Logsdon was nominated for recognition by WEB program co-facilitator, Janine Sangiorgi. “Her leadership in this program is pivotal … she encourages students to take risks and to blossom into wonderful, young adults,” shared Sangiorgi.

Logsdon is involved in an endless list of activities at Skyview to include Kindness and Spirit Clubs, along with coaching volleyball. When it comes to working with peers, Sangiorgi added, “Chris always seeks to support others. She serves with a smile.”

Two JROTC cadets from Falcon High School – C/Capt Ryan Sims and C/MSgt Emma Passig – were recognized for the achievement of earning an all-expense paid scholarship for flight training to become pilots. “I am really, really proud of our ROTC program,” remarked Cheryl Goodyear-DeGeorge, FHS principal. “We continue to produce leader after leader.”

Due to a pilot shortage in both the private sector and in the military, the Air Force developed this scholarship program to promote the career. The scholarships are valued at $20,000 each and cover both ground school and flight training at a civilian university this summer.

Of the 180,000 JROTC cadets worldwide, 150 were awarded the scholarship. To be selected, cadets had to score high on an Air Force officer qualifying test and pass a rigorous flight physical.
