MRES Students Reflect to Create Award-Winning Art
The little artists drew pictures and took photographs, and the accolades accompanied their hard work. Fourteen students at Meridian Ranch Elementary School received awards Nov. 26 as part of the national PTA Reflections contest. The program helps students explore ideas and spark a love for learning, while promoting the fine arts.
Each year, learners from preschool to twelfth grade across the country create and submit original works of art in categories such as literature, photography and visual arts. This year’s theme for the contest, “Heroes Around Me,” inspired students to write about, draw or photograph heroic individuals. For many, the hero selected was a parent or sibling.
Evelyn Overmyer, first-grader, chose to photograph her brother, Gabriel, for her submission. “He makes sure I am safe, and he helps take care of me,” her entry description explained.
The PTA Reflections program began 50 years ago in the Colorado Springs area, and has expanded to a nationwide contest. Students from MRES will see their entries advance to the El Paso County competition in December. From there, submissions could move on to the national contest and compete for scholarships.
“The PTA Reflections program is another way for students to be recognized and to explore themselves,” shared Alicia Froke, MRES parent and chair for the school’s contest.

Literature in Primary Division - Jackson Froke, second grade; and Kendall Randolph, second grade.
Visual Arts in Primary Division - Abigail Lewis, second grade; Teagan Reed, second grade; Mollie Prahl, first grade; and Kendall Randolph, second grade.
Visual Arts in Intermediate Division - Ella Graham, fourth grade; Kayla Jones, third grade; Cooper Holtz, third grade; Sophie Prahl, fourth grade; and Evan Day, fourth grade.
Honorable Mention - Emma Webb, third grade.
