Spec. Ed. Students Walk Miniature Horses

Seventh-grader Raneisha Clay Sierra Jarmon, 16, a Mello Memories volunteer, walks a miniature horse with seventh-grader Raneisha Clay, 12, during a special education activity May 19 at Skyview Middle School in Falcon School District 49. Students with special needs handled two horses bred down from Shetland ponies, an activity offered by volunteers at Mello Memories. The Black Forest-based nonprofit organization delivers emotional support to elderly, disabled and disadvantaged individuals, according to CEO and president Ginny Mills. "The smiles on their faces, it's all magnificent -- they forget about their disabilities," said Mills, explaining how a child left her wheelchair to participate. "They just want to participate as one of the kids. These horses help them find possibilities they didn't know they had."
