BOE Pays Tribute to Military, Students in Fantastic 49

Appreciation for partnerships that support military-connected families in District 49 overflowed before the regular Board of Education meeting Nov. 7. Student groups and local military installations were recognized during Fantastic 49 festivities for their meaningful contributions to military-connected students and families in D49. Representatives from Fort Carson, the U.S. Air Force Academy, Peterson AFB and Schriever AFB were in attendance to receive honors.

The evening kicked off by recognizing Scout Troop #149 for exemplifying their core values such as loyalty and helpfulness. The troop, whose members all attend Falcon Middle School and Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning, received accolades for preparing and serving a free pancake breakfast to local military, veterans and first responders at the district’s inaugural Sunrise Salute Oct. 11.

Falcon High School’s Student 2 Student group (S2S) also received honors. The school’s S2S program was the first of its kind in D49 more than 11 years ago. Thanks to its success of promoting a positive school climate by fostering relationships with military-connected students, District 49 will roll out three new S2S programs this fall, bringing the list of S2S locations to 10.

The evening included expressing thanks to local military bases for their partnerships. “In D49 approximately 25% of all students are military-connected,” shared Dr. Lou Fletcher, director of culture and services. “We work with the Department of Defense Education Activity to provide programs, and we look to military bases to give us letters of support.” One of the newest innovations thanks to such collaboration is the Expeditions bus that offers virtual reality computers to provide learners with real-life STEM lessons.

Lt. Col. Judson Babcock accepted recognition for the U.S. Air Force Academy. “On behalf of the Academy, we thank you for nurturing and maintaining the strong partnership we’ve had,” he commented. “I know that’s reflected by the number of our families that choice into your schools. We thank you and look forward to continuing the relationship.”
