D49 Teachers Win “Extra Yard” Recognition from AFA
Two teachers in District 49 scored regional recognition for going above and beyond in their classrooms. Amy Levi, third-grade teacher at Ridgeview Elementary, and Kortney Sorensen, P.E./health teacher at Falcon High School, were selected as honorees in the Air Force Academy’s “Extra Yard for Teachers” campaign.
Levi and Sorensen each received a surprise visit Sept. 23 from the AFA’s mascot and athletics department representative to notify them they are among only 10 local educators to earn this honor. The AFA recognized the teachers during halftime at the Sept. 27 AFA football game and each received a $1,000 grant for their classroom.
Mallory Lockhart, RVES parent, nominated Levi. “Mrs. Levi’s energy and passion for teaching shines in everything she does,” wrote Lockhart in her nomination. “She believes in students in a way that inspires them to believe in themselves. Students want to do well because of the respect they have for Mrs. Levi.”
Falcon High School freshman, Kaitlyn Hall, nominated Sorensen. “She works harder than any teacher I have ever seen,” shared Hall. “She makes a positive impact because she cares about the school and students. I look forward to her class every single day and wish we had more teachers like Mrs. Sorensen.”
The “Extra Yard for Teachers” campaign is part of a $10,000 grant from the College Football Playoff Foundation. Air Force Academy Athletics received 600 nominations from across the Pikes Peak Region.
