Summit Scholarship: Soar to New Heights

Soar to new heights with a Summit Scholarship! District 49 has partnered with Western Governors University to offer full scholarships to three current ESP staff members. You'll have the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree and teaching license with a scholarship paid for by D49 and WGU. Western Governors is an online university, and studies for the program can begin as early as Summer 2020.

A personal essay and one letter of recommendation from an administrator are required as part of the scholarship application. Applications will be reviewed, and employees who are selected for the program will be notified by late May 2020.

Rules/requirements:
This scholarship is available for ESP employees who joined the district on or before 7/1/2019 and are interested in pursuing a career in teaching. A selection committee comprised of representatives from District 49 and WGU will review the applications, and select three scholarship recipients. Scholarships will cover the full tuition for obtaining a bachelor's degree in education. (Books and fees will be paid for by awardee.) Additional points will be awarded to those who pursue a degree in special education, mathematics education or science education. The WGU courses are self-paced and conclude with a 3-month student teaching experience. Upon successful completion of the program, each candidate will be considered for employment as a teacher within the district and will be required to stay with the district for two years. Scholarship recipients who leave the district or quit the program will be required to pay the district back 50% of the tuition costs.
