The Sand Creek High School Junior ROTC cadets kicked off the event by presenting the colors and the Pledge of Allegiance. Patriotic tunes filled the air as military parents and grandparents enjoyed lunch with their students. “We’ve never been anywhere that’s done an appreciation event like this,” shared Janice Foster, military spouse and RES mom.

The families were treated to a meal of fried chicken and all the traditional side dishes, along with homemade desserts that were created by Remington Elementary staff members. “It’s cool that the school does this,” commented Aaron Grimes, who serves in the U.S. Air Force and whose sons, Jacob and William, attend RES. “It makes me feel appreciated.”

This is the sixth year for the annual patriotic event. “The best part is that students see staff recognizing their parents,” shared Lisa Fillo, principal. “We recognize military parents and family members as a school.”

School leadership was grateful to local businesses that donated food for the meal, as well as giveaways for the door prize drawings. “The response from our community was outstanding,” shared Fillo.
