OES Fourth-Graders Featured On NBC Nightly News

Students in Amy Willis’ fourth grade class at Odyssey Elementary School were featured Nov. 14 on NBC Nightly News.

Students participated in a social poetry project in conjunction with "Car Window Poetry," a local social project group that uses poetry to positively impact people’s lives. Mrs. Willis’ class is the first classroom Car Window Poetry has introduced the concept of integrating poetry and community service to students.

The news story also featured Car Window Poetry founder Alex Lewis as he talked about his vision to reach out to students by tapping into their creativity while making a positive difference in their lives and the lives of community members.

Lewis said he appreciated Mrs. Willis’ students participating in the project and said, “I don’t believe that NBC Nightly News would even be here right now if it wasn’t for her (Mrs. Willis) believing in me and her students being willing and having me be part of their classroom and they have so much magic to share.”

“It’s just amazing that we have a chance to do this cause not every school gets to do this and it’s like we have an opportunity and it’s like one opportunity in a lifetime,” said student Brianne Martin.
