Fitness is the Goal for D49 Teacher
Adapted physical education teacher Sarah Brockberg is passionate about fitness and inclusion for all students in District 49. A lifelong athlete and coach, Brockberg works tirelessly with her students to keep them active.
Brockberg, a state and national Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) member, recently won the SHAPE 2023 Central District Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year award.
“The award is not about me,” said Brockberg. “it’s about the students and all they accomplish.”
Working with PE teachers districtwide, Brockberg ensures students with disabilities are included in physical education activities. She also includes general education students in her program, having them mentor and help students who may need assistance.
“It’s a win for everyone,” said Brockberg. “Students learn to help each other and develop positive peer relationships. There’s nothing better than seeing adapted PE students connect with their peer helpers, in and out of the classroom.”
Brockberg has developed districtwide modified cross country, basketball, and track and field events that encourage inclusion and participation from all students. She was recently recognized for her accomplishments at the D49 Fantastic 49 award presentation before the May 11 Board of Education meeting.
