5th Grade Camp

On Wednesday, April 24th, 5th graders at Evans International Elementary School packed their bags, hugged their parents, and loaded busses bound for the YMCA of the Rockies outside Estes Park. This three-day trip has become an Evans’ tradition for 5th graders and is anxiously anticipated by students throughout the year.

Upon arrival, the excited students set out on a set of leveled hikes that took them around camp, into the lush evergreen forest, and up the mountainside. Students encountered deer, elk and more as they explored nature under the guidance of both the Evans and YMCA staff. Guided sessions took the students down to the riverside to learn about water ecology and to a team building course where they worked together to overcome challenges.  The beautiful facilities at the YMCA also provided students the opportunity to participate in fun activities like the indoor swimming pool, gym time, and the roller skating rink. Tyquan Singletary in Mrs. Huff's class said, "My favorite part was the gym because I got to roller skate and just have time to play," while Jasmine Salgado in Mr. Lang's class liked "hiking, swimming, and having fun at the campfire."

As their time at Evans quickly nears its end, this trip serves as a reminder of the great relationships that have been built as well as a send-off to spur these amazing students on in their academic and personal journeys. Ms. Crocker explained that "Camp is our favorite part of the year to celebrate everything that we have learned and how hard we have worked. It is a chance to build these relationships for the rest of the school year before they depart for middle school."
