Eighth-graders Donate Time to Local Soup Kitchen
Students from Patriot Learning Center volunteered Nov. 5 at the Marion House Soup Kitchen. The eighth-graders from the school donate their time to the soup kitchen the first Friday each month. By the end of the school year, each student has volunteered at least once.
“This is great for young people to come here and see what it’s like,” said Karl Hering, supervisor.
Kim Brown, Language Arts and Social Studies teacher, has been coordinating with the soup kitchen for eight years in District 49. Brown said that beyond seeing the people they’re helping, students learn workplace etiquette and how to take direction. They help with set-up, food preparation, serving, and cleaning dishes. “I think the magic is when the clients come in,” said Brown.
“I think this is a pretty good place,” said eighth-grader Sebastian Hill. After volunteering today, Sebastian says he plans to come back to donate his time outside of school.
