D49 Middle School is one of the Best
Horizon Middle School was named one of the top three middle schools in Colorado Springs in The Gazette’s Best of the Springs 2021.
“It is nice to see Horizon, our students, staff, and community recognized,” said Principal Dustin Horras. “We have some awesome kids here and a great staff that is willing to do whatever it takes to help their students succeed.”
Each year The Gazette asks the community for its favorite businesses, organizations and other local entities, including schools. Though D49 doesn’t know how HMS was nominated, it received tremendous support from this community and HMS families.
Horras believes the community has seen the advancements made at HMS. “Over the past few years Horizon has grown and changed a lot,” he said. “Our focus on student relationships and growth, and the commitment of our staff has contributed both tangible and intangible improvement across our school.”
Horras doesn’t take the credit for the community’s support. “Smart leaders surround themselves with good people and allow them to do their thing. I am lucky to work with a lot of really great people,” he said.
Horizon finished in third place behind, Fountain Middle School and James Irwin Charter Middle School.
Banning Lewis Ranch Academy, a D49 charter school, placed second in elementary schools, behind James Irwin Charter Academy.
