FVA Tops Food Bank Collections From Colorado School Communities

Jodi Fletcher Shannon Coker of Care and Share Food Bank For Southern Colorado and KKTV morning anchor Dave Nancarrow presented a Harvest of Love award Dec. 8 at Falcon Virtual Academy in District 49.

Falcon Virtual Academy placed first in this year’s alternative school category by collecting 7,905 pounds of food in November, which was 5,000 more than second place.

During last year’s food drive, the school received a Giving Goblet award for achieving the greatest year-over-year increase in Harvest of Love donations. They had collected 4,000 pounds, up from 62 pounds the year before.

Jodi Fletcher, assistant principal, says pajama days offered a key catalyst for this year’s food drive at the blended-learning facility, now educating about 500 students in primary and secondary grades. Students and staff members could wear pajamas for a $1 donation, which allows the food bank to acquire 10 pounds of food, or provide eight meals.

“One of my kids calculated it, and it came out to just under 16 pounds donated per student this year,” said Fletcher. “We know a lot of our families benefit from Care and Share on a regular basis, and it’s important to take care of those in our community.”
