District 49 students and staff members attended the Sand Creek Zone Health and Wellness Expo April 29 at Sand Creek High School in District 49. The Springs Ranch Elementary School choir and the Horizon Middle School fiddle club performed in the school’s cafeteria as attendees made their way to the gymnasium. Vendors, including staff members and local organizations, offered information and hosted activities.
Jennifer Szafran, health teacher at Sand Creek High School, worked to coordinate the event after attending another local expo. “It informs the community of what we’re doing in the schools,” she said, citing the snacks offered by nutrition services as an example. “It turned out really well.”
There was no cost to attend the expo, where students participated in golf lessons, rock wall climbing, and other activities. The American Red Cross hosted a blood drive, and thirty minute fitness workshops for activities like yoga and Zumba were available in the adjacent gym.
William Yerger, eighth grade science teacher at Horizon Middle School, hosted a station where students practiced emergency medical techniques. “It doesn’t matter what age group you’re in, you can still save a life,” he said.
