Fifth-graders Study 9/11 During Patriot Day

Kaleb Ranck Fifth-grader Kaleb Ranck, 10, reflects on how 9/11 changed the United States during Patriot Day activities Sept. 11 at Remington Elementary School in District 49. To help fifth-graders identify the causes and effects, teacher Peggy Moos presented a documentary, and then guided them through inquiry-based reading assignments. Sitting in small groups, students looked for the who, what, when, why and facts. They learned about the terrorist attacks 13 years ago, and how U.S. citizens united in patriotism and responded in selfless service. Throughout the school, students and faculty wore red, white and blue for the national day of service and remembrance. Nearly 3,000 men, women and children lost their lives during the attacks on 9/11.
