Horizon Middle School Junior Optimist Club Honored by District 49 BOE

Junior Optimist Club Heather Ulrich, a language arts teacher at Horizon Middle School, explains how the school earned a Junior Optimist Octagon International project award during “Fantastic 49” recognition March 12, ahead of a monthly Board of Education meeting in District 49.

Co-sponsors Ulrich and Kittrie Glen, a science teacher, said the school’s Junior Optimist Club was recognized internationally for coordinating the best community service project.

During the 2013-2014 school year, they created a “Fighting for Fosters” program. Students raised money and gathered donations to provide 1,400 items for area foster kids, according to Ullrich.

During that first year, the club had 12 students. During the 2014-2015 school year, it grew to 32. The students’ latest project involves creating memory boards for local retirement home residents.
