SMS, Japanese Students Open Cultural Doors

Breslin Walls Eighth-graders at Skyview Middle School welcomed visitors from schools in Fujiyoshida, Japan, for a cultural exchange Aug. 8 in District 49.

Mostly leaders with the peer-mentorship program Where Everybody Belongs, the students greeted the teens arriving from almost 6,000 miles away, and gave them a tour of their school.

Eager to explore cultural similarities and differences, 17 students arrived in Colorado Springs from five junior high schools in Fujiyoshida.

The Mount Fuji and Pikes Peak communities formed a sister city relationship in 1962.
