D49 Honors Schools of Distinction in Inaugural Ceremony
More than a dozen schools in the District 49 portfolio of exceptional choices are the recipients of an emerging D49 recognition. On Thursday, March 12, Superintendent Peter Hilts presented each as a School of Distinction to the D49 Board of Education prior to the regular meeting at Sand Creek High School.
“We have elementary, middle and high schools. We have schools from the Falcon Zone, POWER Zone, the Sand Creek zone and our charter portfolio,” Mr. Hilts noted. “Every segment of our community was represented.”

Qualifying schools have earned 74 points or higher on their annual School Performance Framework (SPF) as reported by the Colorado Department of Education. The CDE calculates the scores by measuring overall academic scores, achievement and growth.
The inaugural recognition ceremony featured 13 campuses, combining recipients from 2025 and 2024, the first year D49 began celebrating Schools of Distinction.
“If these schools can get there, they are role model performers, then every school can get there. And that is our vision,” said Mr. Hilts. “We owe our community schools of distinction, and this group is leading the way.”
“I am incredibly proud to see that all of our schools are working so hard towards this goal, and to see both charter and coordinated schools achieving it shows our community the value of that portfolio,” added Marie La Vere-Wright, President of the BOE.
“We're seeing the results of offering the choices and the kinds of education our children need, and recognizing that no school is a one size fits all school,” La Vere-Wright continued. “Different children need different places to thrive. And by providing that, we're rising to distinction and all of you are leading the way.”
