PHS Ropes course field trip

The Bisons of Patriot High School loaded onto buses and made their way to Ponderosa Retreat and Conference Center in Larkspur for a unique opportunity.

“We’re here to do team-building activities, to push us past our limits to where we’re uncomfortable and see how we handle that,” said Ruben, a senior.

Divided into four groups, each had the opportunity to rotate through a high ropes course, a low ropes team-building activity, a leather-making class, and take a “Leap of Faith.”

“Students will be putting the skills they’ve developed in their Discovery advisory program to use - teamwork, effective communication, problem-solving, and assertiveness training,” said Principal Ryan Bailey.

Each course is designed to put these skills to the test and build the student’s confidence along the way with staff and fellow students cheering one another on.

The Leap of Faith was the most mentally challenging with participants climbing up a 30ft telephone pole, then leaping off and attempting to grab a suspended trapeze bar before being lowered back to the ground.

“This is a way for us to get over our fears.  I feel like we’re all bonding and getting to know each other,” said Izzy, a sophomore.

One of the more thrilling elements of the day was riding down the zip line, which she describes as “terrifying, but I loved it and I would do it again because it was so much fun.”
