Celebrating Excellence: An Evening Honoring Teachers & Transportation Volunteers
District 49 hosted February’s Fantastic 49 celebration on February 13 before the monthly Board of Education meeting. The meeting was hosted by Bennett Ranch Elementary School, as part of a series of showcase meetings that have been held different schools across the district.
The first honoree of the evening was Leah Gillis, Horizon Middle School Special Education Teacher. Leah undertook critical organizational and leadership roles at HMS. Her mentorship for new hires has been invaluable in helping new team members acclimate and develop the skills necessary for success.
“Leah’s leadership, passion and tireless efforts have been instrumental in ensuring both her colleagues and students continue to thrive,” said Elizabeth Dalzell, HMS Assistant Principal.
The Santa's Toy Express transportation team, represented by Shauna Orth, Transportation Manager, were the next honorees. This volunteer program sponsors around 50 students facing hardships during the holiday season. It takes 30 members of the transportation department participate to make the event a success.
“It’s one of the most selfless volunteer things that we have in the school district,” said Barbara Austin-Seeley, Senior Executive Assistant to the Superintendent.
The final group of honorers were the Falcon Zone music teachers, including: Mandy Thomason, Joanie Chapman, Bethany Meyer, Travis Yager, Bridget Calhoun, Callen Thompson, Tyler Privia, Alexander Javizian, and Josh Winans. This dedicated group has consistently gone above and beyond to inspire students, build thriving music programs, and strengthen their community through the power of music.
“We love our music programs. We love our music teachers in the Falcon Zone,” said Brian Smith, Falcon Zone Superintendent. “I am honored that they work in this zone, and and the things they do for all of our kids.”
Fantastic 49 is the district’s recognition program that celebrates fantastic staff, students, and community members before the board of education meetings. A sincere thank you to our sponsors, Air Academy Federal Credit Union, Dion’s, and to Texas Roadhouse.
