Opening Day

Opening day for the Horizon Middle School softball team also began a new era for the school, as pregame festivities included a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new synthetic turf field. 

“We are so excited,” said Cindee Borruel, HMS Principal. “Our staff has been working really hard for a long time to make this happen, even before I got here. I’m happy to be a part of seeing this come to fruition. There is a lot of excitement and school pride today.” 

Dustin Horras, Sand Creek Zone Superintendent, was on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. He is the former HMS principal that helped begin the process for the new field. 

HMS Athletic Director Jackie Ornelas said, “I’m stoked about it. I’ve waited a long time for this. We basically played on a pasture for years. I love this new field.”

“We’ve been practicing on the new field,” said Coach Brian Lacosse. “It’s night and day different from what the girls have been going through to where they are right now. They aren’t chasing stickers and weeds. It’s so much better. I’m happy for these girls. I’m excited to watch them play and have fun.” 

Despite giving up an early run, HMS came away with two wins over Skyview Middle School on Tuesday, with the A Team winning 11-5 and the B Team winning 11-7. 

Besides providing a better playing surf for softball, and some P.E. classes, the turf will save the district about 545,000 gallons of water each year. Though there is some maintenance needed, the synthetic field doesn’t need mowing or fertilizer, which also saves money. 

In her ceremony script, Ornelas closed with, “Here’s to a bright future filled with many victories on this new field. Play ball.”
