Hurley Honored by The Arc

Dave Hurley

Dave Hurley was named Public School Personnel of the Year by The Arc of the Pikes Peak Region at its Annual Award Celebration. Hurley is a Special Education Coordinator.

“Receiving an award from a community agency such as the ARC feels good and was unexpected, while also validating the work we are trying to do in our department,” Hurley said. “The coordinator team and director put in a lot of hours supporting me, so I feel as though it's a reflection of the six years of work we have done as a department to improve our communication with families and find solutions for their students.”

Hurley said, “One of the best parts of my job is getting to find and provide training opportunities to our Special Education staff. When I started this position, I had hoped to have a positive impact on our services to students with disabilities and I find this is one of the most effective ways to support the 2,500 plus students with individualized education programs (IEPs) in District 49. Working with the families of our students is another way we are supporting our staff, so there is a great feeling when you leave a meeting and know that the school and parents are working together to take care of the student.”

Hurley was nominated for the award by Peter Boryla, one of the ARC Advocates who has spent many hours working with him at different IEP meetings.
