HMS Music Tour

HMS Music Tour

On Tuesday, Horizon Middle School choir, band and orchestra visited elementary schools in the Sand Creek Zone to provide some Halloween cheer. Each group performed pieces of music to inspire and entertain the elementary students, including the band playing ‘Thriller,” the choir singing “This Is Halloween" from the movie “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and the orchestra playing the theme from “Pirates of the Caribbean.” And most of the HMS students wore Halloween costumes.

“At Horizon Middle School we are constantly looking for ways to do community outreach with our music programs. We spend hours preparing concert music with our band, orchestra, and choir, so we wanted to look for more opportunities to perform it. We reached out to the Zone Elementary Schools and were thrilled that they were interested in hosting us,” said, Melanie Hawthorne Long, HMS Band Director.

Bringing music into the schools is a way to introduce younger students to music opportunities.

“The students sitting in those elementary schools right now are the future of Horizon's music programs. If we can play and inspire one kiddo to say ‘I want to play an instrument or sing,’ then we did our job. When they have the opportunity to see real live music being played by kids that are just like them, they know they can do it too,” said Hawthorne Long.

Springs Ranch Elementary Principal Mako Winston said, “It’s important for our students to see what they can inspire to. Some of our kids are really into the instruments they are already being exposed to in music class. Seeing what they can transition into at middle school is amazing.”

“On the flip side, we talk to our middle school students about leaving a legacy behind and that one day those students they performed for at the elementary school are going to be sitting in their chairs learning just as they are,” said Hawthorne Long.
