We cover a wide geographical region in east Colorado Springs that extends to Falcon. You choose which area you'd like to serve in. You can also select which grade level and subjects you want to teach.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree (any discipline), OR
- A 3 or 5-year substitute authorization, OR
- A Colorado teacher license
Application and Hiring Process
To apply for a substitute position, go to District 49's job application system, found here. Once we review applications, we will contact applicants and schedule them to complete new hire information and attend orientation.

District 49 Authorized Charter Schools
District 49 Charter Schools are authorized by District 49. However, these schools do not use District 49’s substitute pool. If you are interested in becoming a substitute at one of those schools, please apply directly to them according to their instructions.
The $300 Colorado Substitute Stipend is still available now through September 2024 to help cover the costs associated with obtaining a substitute authorization. First-time substitute teachers may qualify for a $300 stipend upon completing the CDE Substitute Boot Camp (register here) and working a minimum of one day as a substitute teacher in a Colorado school district, BOCES, or charter school.
Substitute Boot Camp
Colorado Substitute Boot Camp: a free, virtual seminar specifically designed to support and assist new substitute teachers with starting their first day on the job. Participants will learn about their role and responsibilities as a substitute teacher, including:
- Responsibilities of a Substitute or Guest Teacher when the teacher is
absent. - Understanding and executing academic lesson plans.
- Classroom management and identification of challenged and high-needs students.
- Maintaining appropriate
student records for a teacher who is absent. - School policy and emergency response.
Participants will also have opportunities for networking and connecting with experienced educators. Substitute Boot Camps are led by experienced educators and will feature guest speakers currently working in Colorado's K-12 classrooms.
Substitute Boot Camps are facilitated in the online course system Moodle. Once you register using the form below, you will receive an email from Moodle within 5 business days on how to finish setting up your account and how to access your course. After that, you can complete the course at any time. It should take about two hours to complete.
