• We have found that one of the best ways to support PHS students is by offering Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) time on Friday afternoons.

On Friday's, the regular class schedule ends at 1:30 p.m.  (Classes have been reduced by 10 minutes per period to enable us to offer ELO every Friday.)  From 1:35-3:05 p.m. every Friday, we will be offering ELO for PHS students where two teachers will take turns to be in charge of the ELO period.

ELO is strongly recommended for students who have a D or F in any class to work on raising their grades.  Additionally, ELO is REQUIRED for students who owe time for attendance or disciplinary issues.  Missing a required ELO will be considered “defiance” and will require disciplinary action.  Students who are passing their classes and have no disciplinary/attendance issues may be allowed to go home early, but busses will NOT pick up students early and will still arrive at 3:05 p.m.  All PHS students are welcome to stay for ELO even if they aren’t required to do so.

During ELO, students must do one or more of the following:

    1. Work on any missing or failing work from any class.  Teachers will communicate to the ELO staff the specific details for each student.
    2. Work on any credit recovery (“study hall”) class that they have been assigned to.
    3. Work on their PAIRIN (advisory) assignments.
    4. Make-up time for excessive tardiness or other disciplinary actions (“detention”).

Your student’s advisor and/or teachers will notify parents each week to inform you if your student needs to attend Friday’s ELO for that week.  Please ensure that we have accurate phone numbers and/or emails to make this communication more efficient.

If a student has no need for tutoring (because they are passing ALL classes) and doesn’t owe any detention time, they may attend as many clubs that they are interested in and, therefore, could potentially have a shorter day.  With parent permission, some students may choose to take the day completely off but ONLY if they are passing ALL classes and have no obligations to any of the scheduled clubs.  Once again, PHS will communicate your students’ required plans on these Flex Fridays early in the week.
