Falcon Zone Overview
Falcon Zone has a strong tradition that dates back to 1900. That tradition carries on today with six highly successful schools. Falcon Zone offers the following programs: Academy of Health Sciences, Academy of Finance, Academy of Information and Technology, Air Force JROTC, FBLA, Distributive Education Clubs of America, Link Crew, National Honor Society, Student-to-Student program and many others. The zone offers more than 20 advanced placement and CU Succeed classes. Its schools have performed well on CMAS and SAT.
While the Falcon Zone greatly honors tradition, we also embrace that our learners today deserve a different learning experience from yesteryear—one that will prepare them to be successful in our ever-changing world.
Through Empower Falcon Zone (EmpowerFZ), we aim to empower our learners by offering three main things:

- Elevated Instruction
We want our students to have more voice and choice in their education. We desire to cater more to their interests and needs, while at the same time providing them with unique, challenging, expanded and blended learning opportunities.
Our logo is that of a simple propeller which captures students’ passions. We see students as pilots and when they graduate into the community, they will be fully prepared to pilot their lives toward new horizons and with a passion to make a positive difference in the world.
We began our first cohort of EmpowerFZ teachers in 2018. We are excited to be on this innovative journey with our students!

Degrees and Certifications:
I am truly honored and excited to be the Falcon Zone Superintendent! The zone’s firm foundation of tradition intertwined with innovation provides a great springboard for us to continue to learn, work, and lead and truly be a strong piece of the district’s focus on being the best choice in education.
From my early roots of teaching secondary English/Language Arts, I always desired to ensure that ALL students were provided the best education possible. This yearning eventually launched me into school leadership spanning from assistant principal to superintendent roles. My leadership work began in a neighboring rural district to D49, and I’m so pleased to return to the eastern side of the Pikes Peak region—it really is like coming back home.
I completed my undergraduate degree from Trinity University in San Antonio and my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Educational Leadership from UCCS. My passion continues to be impacting students in phenomenal ways through working with and coaching building principals. My vision for Falcon Zone is to better engage students in innovative and meaningful learning so they are prepared for successful careers and lives in a world we can’t yet imagine!
With a heart for relationship building and growth, I embrace partnering with staff, students, parents, and the Falcon Zone community to achieve the greatness each of our students deserves!
Falcon Zone Updates
Falcon High School graduation requirements will change, beginning with the class of 2021. Teams of administrators and counselors from Falcon Middle School and Falcon High School have begun working on revisions. This work is initiated based on the new Colorado High School graduation guidelines developed by our state. Information will be shared soon across the zone regarding current drafts of possibilities, and a community meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at Falcon Middle School.
In February 2016, we formed a group of parents, staff and community members as the "Falcon Zone Coalition." At this time, at the start of the 2016-2017 school year, we have 14 members who are dedicated to supporting two goals for the coming year: Improving communication and engagement with students, staff and parents between and among school sites; and broadening and enhancing communication with the overall Falcon Zone community. At the August meeting, the team decided to begin immediate work on the first goal, so look for more information soon regarding progress and action in this area.
2014-2015 News in District 49
Patrick Jewell, father of second-grader Brett Jewell, 8, shares his appreciation for significant support needs teacher Dawnise Sandwick of Falcon Elementary School of Technology during a Board of Education meeting May 14 in District 49. Jewell wrote a nomination for Sandwick to receive a teacher appreciation scholarship from the Colorado Springs Down Syndrome Association.
Matthew Wentz, FHS class of 2015 salutatorian, was presented with an appointment to the United States Military Academy West Point during the annual ceremony. Wentz was also honored with a Coca-Cola scholarship, recognition from the American Chemical Society and named as outstanding senior student by the FHS business department May 5.
"I would really like to thank the Falcon Education Foundation for the opportunity and the huge grant that they awarded our school," said Paula Hinson, WHES project based learning instructor and GT coordinator. "The impact of that grant on what these kids are learning is huge."
"One book, one school," a major initiative of Falcon Elementary School of Technology during the spring semester culminated with a school wide viewing of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on April 23. More than 300 students and family members attended the event, a celebration for parents, teachers, staff and students all reading the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Meridith Jensen, a dispatcher and trainer for the El Paso Teller County E-911 Authority, explains how to use an automated external defibrillator Feb. 14 during hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation training at Falcon High School in District 49. The CPR training was part of student-led weekend activities, called “Pump It Up Falcon,” which focused on heart health.
