The One and Only Ivan
One Book: The One and Only Ivan
Our school is embarking on our 7th annual all school book club. This year we are excited to be joined by the other elementary schools in the Falcon Zone in what we are now calling, One Zone, One Book. We are personally asking you to make the time so your family can participate in this special activity by reading this book together at home.
The One Zone, One Book family literacy project is a program where children in all grade levels will be reading and listening to the same book. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but that will still captivate and stimulate older children.
Your family is receiving your own copy of The One and Only Ivan (sent home with the oldest or only child at FESoT) along with a tailored reading schedule so you can keep up at home. Generally you will be asked to read around 30 pages each week. As you finish each reading assignment, initial the calendar to mark your progress. Please save the calendar – you will need it for the Family Movie Night!
While reading this book together, you will meet a gorilla named Ivan who is based on a real gorilla. This would be a great opportunity to discuss the differences between fiction (made-up stories) and nonfiction (facts and true information) stories. This book has elements of both! Students will have access to activity ideas that your family can engage in alongside the reading. Use this to spark conversations and work together to understand the book. Please see the school website for a playlist of activities to accompany the reading. Teachers will also have it posted on their classroom Schoology or Seesaw page. The activities will change with every new section of the book!
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so your child can be included. Throughout the 10 weeks everyone will be talking about The One and Only Ivan at Falcon Elementary!
Our book club will hopefully end with a special Family Night on Friday, April 23rd. You and your family can come to watch the movie “The One and Only Ivan” while enjoying your own picnic dinner. We will give you some literacy ideas and there will be PRIZES! More details on this fun family night will be coming as the date gets closer.
Have fun! When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about. With your help, we can build a community of readers at our school.
