Student Handbook 2017-2018
Welcome to your school. We are glad you have chosen to be part of the Sand Creek community where “Excellence is the Scorpion Way.”
Sand Creek High School is a member of the International Baccalaureate Organization. In fact, the Sand Creek Zone is part of the IB continuum with the Primary Years Program (PYP) at Evans International, the Middle Years Program (MYP) at Horizon and Sand Creek and the Diploma Years Program (DP) at Sand Creek High School. All freshman and sophomore students at Sand Creek High School are part of the IB MYP. The IB MYP is intended to be an academically rigorous education with a strong focus on international mindedness and community service. Students who wish to continue in the IB may enter the Diploma Program (DP) in their junior and senior years. IB DP courses are college-level classes offered in a variety of subjects. Full IB DP students earn the IB diploma concurrent with their high school diploma and may earn college credit upon completing and passing all IB Diploma exams and earning the requisite number of points. To learn more about the International Baccalaureate Program visit their website at http://www.ibo.org.
The student guide is intended to serve as a tool of communication between the school and home regarding school programs, student recognition, discipline and various District 49 policies.
We encourage students to participate in programs and activities as well as athletics. By finding a way to be engaged, you will create long lasting relationships and become part of a larger community. Being a member of Sand Creek High School, and a member of an IB school, is about taking ownership of your learning and personal accountability. You will be challenged to organize yourself and to perform to the best of your abilities. You are encouraged to ask questions, advocate for yourself, and participate fully in classroom activities. Your willingness to put forth your best effort will lead to personal rewards. We also encourage you to share your successes and learning with your parents and the community. Together, we all make Sand Creek an excellent place to learn!
As part of the International Baccalaureate, students at Sand Creek will learn about community needs, philanthropy, and the importance of giving back to their community. They will discover areas of interest and determine how they, as members of the global community, can make a difference in the lives of others.
All freshmen and sophomore students and athletic teams are required to participate in and document at least one community & service project. Service projects may take place at school or off campus.
