Welcome Back Firebird Nation Families!
The beginning of the year is here! We are looking forward to an outstanding start with our 6th Grade Orientation WEB Day, Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) Rotations, and our Welcome Back Assembly. Please make sure to read through this entire newsletter email as we have included some very important information for the start of the year.
Halls/Lockers: Firebird Nation is so excited for our students and community to see the work that took place at FMS this summer. The new hallway floors and new lockers really make our school look awesome. We are excited that students will all have their own lockers this year! We look forward to seeing the positive Firebird Nation Spirit throughout the school and community as we start off another great school year! We are so glad everyone is back!

Safety: With school starting, it is VERY IMPORTANT to remember about safety around the school, especially during pick up and drop off times. We will have staff out front this week to help direct traffic around our loop in the correct pattern. Please follow the directions carefully so that we can keep things moving as smoothly as possible. It usually takes several days to get the system moving again and we appreciate your patience with this process. We will also have staff at the main school intersection to help students that may need to cross the street. Please let your students know that if they need to cross Towner, to please do so at the spot where our staff members are stationed to ensure their safety. We ask that all drivers use extra caution around the school and at the intersections around the school off of Meridian, Londonderry, and Stapleton. Many students cross these streets and we want to use caution so that they can cross safely. We also ask that students use the crosswalks on campus to cross the lots.
Food and drink in the halls: To keep FMS looking new, we will not be allowing unsealed drink or food items in the halls. Students will need to finish their food items and beverages in the lobby or commons before going down the halls to class. Students will still be able to store their lunches that they bring to school in their lockers. Water in water bottles is also ok. We are working to avoid spills on the carpet and in the lockers so that we can keep FMS looking great and respect the work that was done.
Graduation Guidelines: One other piece we will be working on this year relates to the new Colorado Graduation Guidelines. Last year, the Colorado Board of Education approved new graduation guidelines for the state. These changes will go into effect beginning with the class of 2021 (our current 8thgraders); so all of our students at FMS will be the first groups of students to have new requirements. Our staff is collaborating with the High School to ensure we have the information on how our students will be impacted in the future. We are planning a parent information night for an evening in September at FHS to share this new information with you, answer questions, and also gather feedback on how to best meet the needs of our students. Once the date and time are finalized, we will share the information with you. In preparation for this, the FMS staff will be making one small adjustment to our grade books. Please note, we are NOT incorporating a brand new system or changing how grades are earned in any way. All we are doing is grouping assessments, tests, quizzes, homework, projects, etc. by skill/standard to determine the areas students have demonstrated competency versus those that they have not yet demonstrated competency. It is a slight adjustment that does not impact how grades have been calculated in the past or how they will continue to be calculated. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have further questions about this. We will also be discussing this at upcoming PTSA and School Accountability Committee Meetings.
August 4th – Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) meeting – 5:30pm
August 5th – Back to School Dance from 3-5pm in the Commons. Cost: $4
August 11th – Back to School Night - This is a VERY IMPORTANT event again this year! We will be running a bell schedule from 6-7:30pm so that you can attend each of your students’ classes to meet the teachers and learn about their classroom policies. We value our parents being part of their child’s education. Our goal is to foster this value, build a strong relationship with you right at the beginning, and communicate about what the upcoming year will bring for your student. FMS Dining Services and PTSA will be sponsoring a BBQ from 5-5:45pm before the Back to School Night that is open to all of our families. We will be serving a Hamburger or Hot Dog, Chips, and a Drink for $4. There is also a family meal deal to buy 4 meals and get a 5th free. We will have some quick introductions at 5:45pm before sending you to the first class. We hope to see you there!
Grade Level Admin/Counselors: Firebird Nation is pleased to welcome several new staff members and teachers this year. All of them have done an exceptional job so far as part of the Firebird Nation Team. We are again fortunate to have a counselor and administrator at each grade level to work with students on a variety of academic, social, behavioral, and emotional issues that may come up. These admin/counselor teams are here to address any concerns that you or your students may have through the upcoming year. They will also follow your students through the years at FMS to help build a strong positive relationship during their entire Middle School career. Should you have any questions, concerns, or positive things to share about what is taking place in your child’s classroom or around the school, please feel free to contact your students’ teachers and the following:

If you need to make an address change, please bring in proof of residency to our school. If you have forgotten your Portal password, contact the administrator at www.d49.org/parentportal and fill out form. Payment for fees may be made through the portal or with cash/check at Check-In.
