D49 Teachers Win “Extra Yard” Recognition from AFA
Two teachers in District 49 scored regional recognition for going above and beyond in their classrooms. Amy Levi, third-grade teacher at Ridgeview Elementary, and Kortney Sorensen, P.E./health teacher at Falcon High School, were selected as honorees in the Air Force Academy’s “Extra Yard for Teachers” campaign.

SRES Super Day of Science
Springs Ranch Elementary School students participated in “Super Day of Science,” on Sept. 13. Colorado College physics students volunteered their services for the day’s events as they prepared interactive science demonstration shows.

Former NBA Star Sparks Passion Within Firebirds
P.E. teacher Jedd Sims wanted a lesson for his Falcon Middle School students different from the rest. “I’m a big basketball fan and thought it would be unique for our kids to meet a former NBA player,” Sims shared. That’s when he learned about the Denver Nuggets Community Ambassadors.

Grant Dollars Bring Physics to Life with New Tech in FHS Classroom
FHS students are performing an experiment similar to one Galileo attempted 400 years ago in Tim Cerniglia’s Physics 1 class using some updated technology. Working with a $5,000 grant awarded by Century Link, Cerniglia purchased new technology to add practical application to his students’ coursework.

Sand Creek Stings for Homecoming
Friday the thirteenth and a harvest full moon proved to be good luck for the Sand Creek Scorpions for their homecoming football game vs. Cheyenne Mountain on Sept. 13. Scorpions stung their opponents in a 21-6 victory.

A formidable train of black fabric meandered into the Broadmoor World Arena the evening of Saturday, May 25. A Vista Ridge High School senior from the class of 2019 filled each billowing ebony robe -- the required dress for more than 330 student participants in the VRHS graduation ceremony.

Falcon High Class of '19 Soars into New Season of Life
At 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 25, more than 260 Falcon High seniors walked together for their last assembly as FHS students. In flowing robes of green and gold, the class of 2019 strode single-file to find their seats for a commencement ceremony at the Broadmoor World Arena.

Vista Ridge Boys' Track and Field Sprints to Second State Championship
The Vista Ridge High School Boys' Track and Field Team earns the school’s second state track and field championship May 21 at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood. The state finals meet was postponed and shortened to two days for the first time in history. The Wolves, led by strong efforts from their sprinters, ran away with the state title, scoring 93.5 points. Air Academy High School in District 20 was second with 58 points.

BOE Honors Senior Set to Earn Associate's Degree and High School Diploma
“Meleah is the first student in District 49 to complete her Associates of Arts and Business while completing her high school degree at the same time,” said Elisabeth Fisk, Vista Ridge High School concurrent enrollment dean during her introduction. Meleah earned college credit in high school through concurrent enrollment, a program for students to earn free college credits on high school and college campuses while completing high school graduation requirements.

Student-Athletes Celebrate National Signing Day
Twelfth-graders Jalen Sami, 17, and Philip Tuiava, 17, prepare to sign letters of intent Feb. 1 during National Signing Day at Vista Ridge High School. Jalen will play football at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., and Philip will play football at Eastern NM University in Portales, N.M.

FOX 21: New Partnership Leads Blind Runner to State Championships
Caleb Gilbert, VRHS eleventh-grader, is legally blind, but that doesn’t stop him from pursuing his passions. “You just have to go for it,” he said. So in his junior year, Gilbert decided to compete in track and field.

Game on! Student Demand Creates Game Design Pathway at VRHS
“We learned how to push ourselves to make stuff and learn how to use the resources at hand,” said Isaac Fraire, an eleventh-grader who served as a programmer for the team. Isaac explained that this isn’t like a traditional class, “there isn’t one figure, one person who we could always go to and ask for help.”

High School Students Help Middle Schoolers Learn To Lead
"A leader doesn't have to be perfect," said Sophia Mayhugh, seventh grade at Springs Studio for Academic Excellence when asked what she learned at the annual District 49 Middle School Leadership Conference at Sand Creek High School April 15. "A leader makes mistakes, but always tries to do the next right thing."

The ninth annual fishing event for students with special needs was held May 7 at Prospect Lake in Memorial Park. Gross and fine motor skills, fish biology and habitat, knot tying and water pollution were featured as part of the curriculum for the event.
