Welcome to the Falcon Zone!

My name is Brian Smith, and I am honored to serve as your Falcon Zone Superintendent. With over two decades in District 49, including roles as a science teacher, assistant principal, principal, and now superintendent, I am deeply rooted in the Falcon community and passionate about its continued growth and excellence.

I began my journey in education as a Chemistry and AP Chemistry teacher at Falcon High School—go Falcons! I proudly sponsored Link Crew and was the voice of the Falcons under the Friday night lights. My leadership path took me to Skyview Middle School as Assistant Principal, and then to Falcon Middle School as Principal and later Executive Principal, where I had the privilege of helping design and launch Bennett Ranch Elementary. I am now in my third year as Superintendent of the Falcon Zone, and every step has only strengthened my belief in the power of education to transform lives.

Originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, I grew up surrounded by sunshine—and a few scorching 120+ degree days! I moved to Durango to attend Fort Lewis College, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and my teaching certification. Later, I completed my Master’s in Educational Administration from the University of Denver. When I’m not in schools, you’ll find me outside—hiking, skiing, or chasing the next great fishing adventure. (Ask me about the time I reeled in a 240-pound marlin in Cabo!)

At the heart of everything we do in the Falcon Zone are our students. We believe in personalized learning, strong relationships, and creating schools that prepare every student for life’s next steps. From our youngest learners to our graduating seniors, our goal is to empower each one to Earn their WINGS—Wisdom, Integrity, Networking, Grit, and Self-Confidence. Through Engaging Environments, Enhanced Opportunities, and Elevated Instruction, we are building a community of empowered learners who are ready for tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities.
