Expanding Cultural Capacity
Expanding Cultural Capacity
In District 49, our current student achievement and growth data indicates that students in various sub-groups are not growing academically at the rate we would like to see. These groups of students include minority students, as well as students from poverty, students with disabilities and English language learners. To better focus on the needs of every student, we coordinate for and participate in events that strive to expand cultural capacities in school communities, focusing on both awareness and inclusion initiatives. We often provide support for conference fees for staff using grant funding specifically targeted for culturally responsive teaching strategies. We also routinely offer transportation for district participants.
African American Youth Leadership Conference
African-American Youth Leadership Conference in Colorado Springs began in January 1992 and has steadily grown in stature, serving 400 students each year, on average, and has gained the overwhelming support of corporate, civic, academic, religious, fraternal, social organizations and individuals in the community.
