Mrs. Christine DeVivo-Speer
Welcome to the ceramics program at VRHS, I am Christine DeVivo-Speer and it is an honor to work with you and your students at VRHS.
Art has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember, from early childhood and high school art clubs through to college where I received a BFA in Fine Arts from Arizona State, then a Masters in Art Education from Regis University. In my career, I have had the good fortune to have taught students of all grade levels all mediums of art but I feel that ceramics has a universal appeal, unlike any other art form. Clay is an ancient art, it is utilitarian, a craft, and a form of fine art with therapeutic qualities. I feel it has the ability to teach us patience, perseverance, confidence, courage, grit, as well as explorative and problem-solving skills. Most students who have turned away from art reconnect with their creative-self in the ceramics studio, while those who enjoy art are able to strengthen their skills in all art mediums.
As for myself, I have a wonderful blended family with children in middle school, high school, and a recent college graduate. We enjoy hiking, music, movies, discovering new places, and foods. Antiquing, travel, quite creative time, cooking, gardening, yoga, learning new things, home restoration shows are a few of my personal favorite things. I am also an active member of the Colorado Arts Educators Association where I am a regional representative, and the 2016 Art Educator of the Year in the Charter School division.
