Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Chris Flatley
Hi Raider Family,
My name is Chris Flatley and I am the teacher for students with Affective Needs here at Stetson! I've been teaching now for about 20 years in special education. I took some time off here and there to raise my three children. My husband is retired from the Special Forces, so wev'e done our share of moving around.
I recieved my bachelor's degree in Special Education from Northern Illinois University in 1991. I taught Special Education English for two years at Bloom Township High School prior to getting married and moving to Massachesettes. There, I was a long term substitute teacher for a third grade class until the military relocated us to Fort Carson, Colorado. I took some time off from teaching to raise my two older children. During that time, we moved to Stuttgart, Germany and then on to Key West, Florida. While living in Florida, I taught Life Skills at Sugarloaf Middle School on Sugarloaf Key. Once our time was served in Florida, my family moved back to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where I had my third child, and taught Life Skills at Venetucci Elementary in Security/Widefield. My husband then retired, and we relocated to Woodbridge, Virginia, where I was the lead teacher for the Orthopedic Impairment Program at Marumsco Hills Elementary in Prince William County.
My family and I missed Colorado so much, so we packed up and moved back in 2011. We're staying!! Since being back, I've worked as a paraprofessional in a Significant Needs classroom in D49. I then renewed my professional teacher's license and have been teaching at Stetson Elementary in the Social Communication and Affective Needs programs ever since. I truly enjoy working to help students with special needs access their education to the highest degree of success. Watching the growth of young minds is enlightening and reassuring which makes this profession so rewarding.
I prefer the warmer seasons and being outside. My hobbies include gardening, listening to pretty much any type of up-beat positive music, and just socializing with my friends and neighbors. :0)
