THE BEST CHOICE TO LEARN, WORK, LEAD

School of Choice Information

Whether you are a District 49 resident or reside in another school district, school of choice provides the opportunity to enroll your child in a school outside of your zoned neighborhood school. The approval process is based on space availability and the ability of the school of choice to meet the educational needs of your child. The review and approval process for school of choice is at the school level.  Central Enrollment cannot answer as to whether or not a school of choice application may be accepted.

District 49's coordinated and charter schools invite you to visit and experience their unique educational environments. Please contact schools directly to set up an appointment.

For parents/guardians whose students attend a non-District 49 school or who attend Banning Lewis Ranch Academy (BLRA), Rocky Mountain Classical Academy (RMCA) or Power Technical Early College (PTEC):

An online District 49 enrollment application must be filled out if your child is either not enrolled in a District 49 school or currently attending BLRA, RMCA or PTEC. All supporting enrollment documents (child's birth certificate and immunization record and parent's ID and proof of residence) must be submitted with the online enrollment. Please note that middle and high school students will be required to provide transcripts to the school after the enrollment application has been completed and processed.

After your online enrollment application has been processed, you will be notified via email at which time you will be able to take your completed school of choice application directly to the school that you wish to choice enroll into. Decisions as to choice acceptance are entirely up to the specific school site and their approval process.  Please inquire directly with the school as to acceptance or declination procedures and time frames.

For parents/guardians whose students currently attend a District 49 coordinated (neighborhood) school but wish for their child to attend a different District 49 coordinated (neighborhood) school:

A new online enrollment is not required.  If your school of choice application is approved, the new school will work with the previous school to transfer your enrollment over.

For parents/guardians whose students currently attend a coordinated (neighborhood) school but are interested in having them attend the following charter schools: Imagine Classical Academy (ICA) or Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning (PPSEL):

These charter schools utilize the same enrollment and student information systems.  A school of choice application is not required.  If you seek and are granted acceptance into ICA or PPSEL, they will work with the previous school to transfer the enrollment over - a new application is not required.

For parents/guardians whose students currently attend Imagine Classical Academy (ICA) or Pikes Peak School of Expeditionary Learning (PPSEL) but wish for them to attend their coordinated (neighborhood school):

If you are wishing to transfer your student to their neighborhood school, simply take your parent identification along with your current proof of residency to the school and the new school will work with ICA or PPSEL to transfer the enrollment over.

School of Choice Documents

  • How are School of Choice applications approved?

    Posted by:

The selection process is based on a priority system. Residents of District 49 are considered first. Non-residents are considered second. Administrators make every effort to accommodate requests; however, choice enrollment acceptance is limited by space, staff availability and the schools' Choice procedures. Other determining factors involve the requested grade level or availability of special programs and facilities to meet a student’s educational needs.

  • If my School of Choice application is accepted, how long is it valid?

    Posted by:

School of Choice applications are good for the duration of an academic level. For example, a student who is accepted into an elementary school does not have to complete a new choice application until they're ready to enter middle school. District 49 residents who move out of the district may finish the current school year, but must submit a new choice application for the following school year.

  • Will my high school student’s eligibility be impacted by using choice enrollment?

    Posted by:

Restricted athletic eligibility is a factor that families should consider before transferring to another school. Parent/guardians are encouraged to completely read and understand the Colorado High School Activities Association rules. According to the CHSAA Transfer Rule, "A student who transfers to a different high school without a bona fide family move over the summer will have restricted eligibility for the first 50 percent of the season in the upcoming school year in those sports (sponsored by CHSAA) in which they participated during the calendar year preceding the transfer.” If you have other questions, please contact your school's athletic director.
