Four years ago, the District 49 business office embarked on a project to bring greater structure and consistency to school fee programs. This included bringing the fee programs into the district accounting system, and implementing processes to encourage accuracy, completeness, and validity of the accounting records. The board of education has directed the business office to differentiate athletic fees in the same way academic and activity fees are. This means the fee is more related to the activity being supplemented with the fee, rather than assuming a blanket, single-price approach the district has used for years.
The cost of both educational and peripheral programs is high. Bringing greater structure to peripheral program fees and bringing the true cost of peripheral programs to the board, parents and administration will allow good, informed decisions to be made in a balance of providing the best education product and activities for well-rounded students.
Athletic fees in District 49 have remained steady for at least eight years. During that time, costs for transportation, personnel and equipment have continued to rise. To offer our student athletes the best possible facilities and equipment, participation fees will increase starting in the 2015-2016 school year. Athletic fees cover some of the costs for:
- Athletic trainers
- CHSAA fees
- PPAC fees (high school)
- Judges, officials and referees
- Tournament fees
This raise in fees still keeps the district at or below the fees of most neighboring school districts. It also gives our schools support in providing the best for our students. The costs will be published in each school’s 2015-2016 athletic handbook.
