    At the end of most school years, we celebrate, take a well-deserved breather, and then slowly shift our thinking toward August and the preparation to do it all again. This year, summer break is like everything else—unknown and unpredictable.

    We are excited to celebrate student success, and our innovation and growth in the Sand Creek Zone! Most recently with athletics, the Sand Creek girls and boys basketball teams won their district championships, and both will be entering the playoffs this week with our girls team ranked #1 in the state and Pikes Peak Athletic Conference Champions.

    Congratulations are well deserved by two Falcon Zone educators! Firebird Nation Campus Executive Principal Brian Smith and Aaron Lentner, Meridian Ranch Elementary School third-grade teacher, are both finalists for top recognition by the National Council on Digital Convergence.

    It’s an exciting time in the iConnect Zone! We commemorated breaking ground on a facility expansion project at the Springs Studio for Academic Excellence campus Dec. 12. In Fall 2020, students who attend SSAE, PPEC and the FHAP will enjoy additional space at the innovative campus.

    We continue to grow! A few numbers will help me tell that story. How many students we have is a simple question with a complicated answer. This is due to the complexity in our portfolio of schools. In total, reports for D49 will indicate we have approximately 26,700 students this year.

    This may come as a surprise to each of you (or not)... but District 49 is growing! And we are growing fast. This was a main theme in the community briefings that Brett, Peter and I delivered at Inspiration View Elementary, Bennett Ranch Elementary and Sand Creek High School between September 10 and 16.
