African-American Youth Leadership Conference

Why: Since the first African-American Youth Leadership Conference in Colorado Springs on Jan. 16, 1992, the conference has steadily grown in stature, serving 400 students each year, on average, and has gained the overwhelming support of corporate, civic, academic, religious, fraternal, social organizations and individuals in the community. The conference content encompasses the following areas:
- A Workshop for parents: Covering Finance, College, Student Assistance
- Uniquely designed courses: Encompassing Money Management, Careers, History, Internet Safety,
- The Science Guy (fun, interactive science)
- A Leadership Institute: Providing tactics for meeting the challenges of the Real World
- Lunchtime entertainment: Local talent, Music Groups, Dance Groups and Drill Teams
- Project Alpha (optional): Teaching male students to be a “Man of Distinction”
Project Alpha provides education for young males 12-15 years old on sexuality, fatherhood and the role of males in relationships. Motivates young men to make decisions about their goals and values, and act in ways that support their decisions. Builds young men’s skills through role-playing.
