School Choice Information

There are two types of enrollment in Falcon School District 49, choice enrollment and open enrollment.

CHOICE ENROLLMENT (Download an application here)
Choice enrollment allows Falcon families to enroll in schools other than their neighborhood schools. This wonderful opportunity is available to both residents of Falcon School District 49 as well as non-residents. Choice enrollment is limited, however, by space availability and the ability of schools to meet a student’s educational needs.
Learn about all D49 Schools and Programs in the 2010 Enrollment Guide.

To take advantage of Choice Enrollment, parents must apply during the specified time frame, and be accepted according to the selection process.

Colorado law requires each school district to establish its own policies for enrollment.  We encourage families to research and thoroughly understand procedures for choice enrollment in for District 49 before making a choice.  Falcon School District 49 Choice Policies

When is the Choice enrollment period?
The choice enrollment period for the 2010-2011 school year is
January 15, 2010 – March 15, 2010.

Where do I get a Choice application?
A Choice application is available to print in pdf here.  Also, applications can be picked up at any Falcon District 49 school.

Where do I submit the application?
The applications should come directly to the district office.  It can be dropped off at the main reception area, mailed or faxed.

Submit to:

Carrie Corlew
Falcon School District 49
10850 E. Woodmen Drive
Falcon, CO 80831

Fax to: 719.494.8900

How will applications be approved?
The selection process is based on a priority system.  Residents of Falcon School District will be placed first.  Non-residents will be placed second.

Administration will make every effort to accommodate requests.  Choice acceptance is limited by space and staff availability at the school and requested grade level and/or availability of special programs and facilities needed to meet a student’s educational needs.

If my choice application is accepted, how long is it valid?
A choice application is good for the duration of an academic level.  For example, this means that a student who is accepted into an elementary school does not have to complete a new choice form until he or she is ready to enter middle school.   If a resident of Falcon School District moves out of district at any time, he or she may finish the school year, but must submit a new choice application for the following school year.

Can I go back to my neighborhood school at any time?
Careful consideration should be made before making any choices.  Once a student choices into a school, that student gives up his/her spot at the neighborhood school.  A family would then need to fill out a choice application during the choice window for the following school year in order to re-enter his/her neighborhood school.

How do I find out about what each school offers?
A link to each school is available from our main website or by clicking here.  Choice booklets detailing focus, academic offerings, start times, and locations are available at each school or in the reception are of our district office.

Does my child automatically get full-day kindergarten if my choice application is accepted?
For parents of kindergarten students, the approval of a Choice application only guarantees a spot in the half-day kindergarten at the school of choice.  In order to participate in the lottery for full-day kindergarten you must register and enroll in that school.  Parents may only enter one lottery.

Will my high school student’s eligibility be impacted by choice?
Restricted athletic eligibility is a factor that families should consider before transferring to another school. According to the CHSAA (Colorado High School Activities Association) Transfer Rule, “A student who transfers to a different high school without a bona fide family move over the summer will have restricted eligibility for the first 50% of the season in the upcoming school year in those sports (sponsored by CHSAA) in which they participated during the calendar year preceding the transfer.” Parents are encouraged to fully read and understand the CHSAA rules.

If you have other questions, please contact your school's athletic director.

OPEN ENROLLMENT
Open enrollment is available to families moving into the district during the school year.  Families new to the district have the opportunity to enroll in their neighborhood school or another school of choice.  There may not be space available at a school of choice, in which case a family must enroll in their neighborhood school.
