       Welcome to FIRST GRADE
       at Woodmen Hills Elementary School !
 

   First Grade is an exciting and challenging year packed with learning and growth!  

  At this time we have five 1st grade classrooms. Our fabulous 1st grade teachers are Mrs. Kaiser, Mrs. Reherman, 
  Mrs. Curnow, Ms. Grant, and Mrs. Ratliff.  

  To prepare your child for a successful start in 1st grade, during the summer please work
  with your child on the following:

       * Read to and with your child daily.

           * Identify all letters and corresponding sounds. (Out of  order too !)

 * Continue to practice your yellow pre primer sight word list working toward

    mastery by the beginning of 1st grade. (Without sounding out !)

           * Write your fist and last name with proper capitalization.

           * Practice counting and writing numbers 1-100.

           * Practice memorizing addition facts to 5.

 Our year in 1st grade!

            First grade is an incredible year! Your child will transition to an entire exciting day of
    academic activities. One of the joys of being a 1st grade teacher is seeing the immense growth your
    child will experience both academically and socially.  
           We will be working collaboratively with you and your child this year to achieve the following
     goals by the end of the year:  
        
Reading
       * Mastery of sight words of the following sight word lists:
              - Pre primer (yellow list), Primer (blue list), 1st grade (purple list)
       * Identify the main idea.
       * Use a variety of strategies to decode text.
       * Retell a text with characters, setting, problem, solution, and sequence of  events. 
       * Read fluently honoring punctuation, intonation, and phrasing.

       Writing
       * Write a simple paragraph with correct capitalization and punctuation.
       * Use the stages of the writing process.
       * Use correct spelling on tests and be able to transfer to writing.

        Math
       * Read, write, and sequence numbers to 100.
       * Add and subtract numbers to 20. (Automatic recall to 12)
       * Skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.
       * Read and use the calendar.
       * Demonstrate the value of money.
       * Solve problems using pictures, numbers and words.
       * Use graphing skills.
       * Write time to the hour and half-hour.

        Science
       * Demonstrate the ability to use the scientific process.
       * Describe seasons and weather.
       * Identify basic needs of animals.

       Social Studies
       * Explain qualities of a good neighbor.
       * Appreciate cultural heritage and holiday traditions.
       * Create a simple timeline.
       * Apply map skills.

      Life Skills
       * Be respectful and responsible.
       * Complete in class work and homework in a timely manner. 
       * Stay on task.
       * Listen and follow directions.
       * Work cooperatively with others.
       * Organize materials.
