Text Box: Our Year in Review

Text Box: Reading and Writing
Text Box: Throughout the entire 2nd grade year, there is a strong emphasis on reading and writing.  During each quarter, classes focus upon specific concepts in both of these important areas.
Following is a brief summary of what your child will be learning in these two areas during the school year.
Reading:
At Woodmen Hills our 2nd grade reading instruction is centered around guided reading groups.  Throughout the year, teachers support the

Students also participate in the Saxon Phonics program.  This curriculum introduces phonics and spelling topics to students in spaced steps throughout the year.  Previously learned topics are also  continually reviewed and practiced.
Text Box:     Writing:
Second graders begin their year mastering basic writing skills.  Woven into our writing curriculum is an instruction are instructional strategies from Step-Up to Writing and 6 Trait.
By the end of 2nd grade, students will should have mastered their basic conventions and  be able to plan, draft, revise, proofread, and publish an expository or narrative piece of writing.
Text Box: Celebrations!
We enjoy an annual field trip to the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings to experience how the Anasazi people lived.  A spring field trip to the Olympic Training Center is also planned.
The Falcon Fire Department visits each 2nd grade class every month.  They teach the students about a variety of topics  such as fire safety, water safety and bike safety.  We end the year with a “bike rodeo” that is organized by our wonderful fireman volunteers
Second grade classrooms host several class parties a year including ones before fall break, winter break and Valentine’s Day!
Several 2nd grade teachers participate in the Pizza Hut Book It Program.  This program rewards students who read daily with a monthly coupon for a personal pan pizza!

Text Box: Social Studies!
Second Grade is an exciting year for Social Studies.
The core of our curriculum is taken from a textbook called We Live Together.  Students learn map skills,  describe different types of communities, discuss ways to be a good citizen and learn about our past, present and future.
      Science!
Second graders learn about the world around them with the assistance of a science curriculum published by Hartcourt.  Topics we cover during the year include life cycles, balances and weights, changes to the Earth’s surface and the scientific process of predicting, observing and recording data.
