Meeting Notes for WHES BAAC

April 14, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 5:05pm

Grade Level Reports:

Kindergarten is working on many projects. A Field Trip to the May Museum is in the planning stages to culminate the study of "Creepy Crawlies". Upcoming events include eating lunch at school for ½ day students, Field Day, and Kindergarten Graduation

1st grade is planning a Field Trip to Cave of the Winds. In Math, 3-dimensional shapes, telling time, money, and place value are being studied. Energy is the topic in Science and all stages of the writing process are being practiced in Writing. In reading, first graders are practicing retelling with characters, setting, and events, as well as mental image, decoding, making inferences, and using strategies for comprehension. Units in the completion stages include caves and bats, Earth Day, and the Spring Season

The 3 Teacher Candidates in 2nd grade are in full-time teaching, which has given the co-operating teachers and opportunity to work on an Assessment Notebook for the grade level. Summarizing, fluency, and all areas of comprehension on Alpine are being reviewed. Most students are working on an eight sentence paragraphs, while the more advanced students are working on eleven sentence paragraph. In math, students are learning fractions, time, graphing, and probability. Upcoming events include a special visitor for Earth Day recycle lesson, a Field Trip to the Olympic Training Center, Bike Safety Day with the Falcon Fire Department, and theme days during the last week of school.

3rd grade is working on summarizing and sequencing in passages. In math, students are learning about multiplication with parentheses. In Science, all classes are "growing" Painted Lady Butterflies as well as plant parts and how the plants needs are met. Upcoming Field Trips include Garden of the Gods and Sky Sox

4th grade has introduced a multiplication club during 2nd recess for students whose timed test scores are less than 95%. Students are excited about the Sky Sox Field Trip and the end-of-the year auction. In Math, review. In Science, rocks and minerals. Poetry writing and persuasive paragraphs the focus in writing. Each class is in the process of projects based on class-read novels. In history, Colorado projects will begin soon.

Many 6th graders participated in a Space Symposium at the Broadmoor with Ms. Whitted and Ms Daniel. In writing, students are working on voice while in reading the focus is on literary criticism and the ability to develop their own "valid" opinion instead of believing media and propaganda. Over 50% of the 6th graders have moved into 7th grade math. The 6th graders will also be attending the Sky Sox game in May. Their World Fair will possibly be open for viewing on May 9th. Implementation of "Understanding by Design" will include a Field Trip to Mr. Powers’ house in Black Forest. The students will learn about science, math, communication, and use of a GPS.

A District-created Crisis Bag is now part of our building

Crisis flip charts will be in Teacher’s boxes by the end of the week. One chart per classroom.
