Woodmen Hills Elementary School Building Accountability Advisory Committee (B.A.A.C.) Minutes for Jan. 14, 2008 Meeting
I. The agenda was approved by Drew Thorp. II. Grade Level Reports: Dec. /Jan. News from Kindergarten: § This week the kindergarten teachers are beginning a book study using: Differentiating Instruction in Kindergarten by Cindy Middendorf. § From the November Kindergarten conference we attended , the Kindergarten teachers are implementing new ideas for: sight words, mini- lessons, reading group strategies, music/movement, and math/alphabet instruction. § In science, kindergarten students are studying weather. § Fairy Tales/Friendship/Winter themes § We are beginning preparations for the 100th day of Kindergarten…tentatively scheduled for Feb. 8th. Jan. News from 1st grade § 1st graders are studying about how and where penguins live. § In Science, 1st graders are studying seasons and how seasons affect plants, animals, and our daily life. § In phonics, the students are learning about contractions, digraph oo, and spelling rules with ff, ll, and ss. § In writing, 1st graders are beginning framed paragraphs about penguins. § In Math, students in 1st grade are studying place value, measurements with centimeters and inches, and story problems. The First Grade Team has begun a book study and discussion group. The book being used is Teaching with Love and Logic. 2nd Grade: § In reading, 2nd graders are studying main idea and retelling. In math, 2nd graders are focusing on place value, money, skip counting, story problems, and math explanations. § 2nd graders are looking forward to the 100th Day of School. § Students in 2nd grade will be publishing a book with a creative writing prompt. 3rd Grade: § In guided reading, 3rd graders are focusing on sequence of steps and are practicing for CSAP. § 3rd graders have taken the Mid Year District Math Assessment and Unit 4 Multiplication Testing. § 3rd graders are practicing the descriptive writing process and how to use details in writing. § 3rd graders are also studying landforms in science. 4th Grade: § Science Fair Projects are due February 19. § 4th graders are using the money system for rewards, to balance a register, and to keep track of deductions. § 4th graders are involved in CSAP preparation. § There is no longer an afternoon recess for 4th grade. 5th Grade: § In reading, students are studying cause and effect and locating important information. § Students are practicing expository and persuasive writing. § In Math, students are collecting data. 5th graders have shown gains on the District Math Assessments. § Science Fair Projects are due on Feb. 19. § 5th graders are taking a field trip to the Denver Museum in March. 6th grade: § 6th graders are receiving differentiated instruction in math groups. § 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners from each classroom will participate in the WHES Science Fair. § The Science Fair will be held all day on Feb. 27th with public viewing from 3:00-5:30. § Differentiation for CSAP reading is being provided to 6th graders through small groups. § 6th graders are going to visit Medieval Times in Social Studies.
III. The assistant principal’s report was given by Karen Yanko. The showcase of Schools Choice Night is January 14th, 2008. at Sand Creek High School. The Kids for Kosovo shipped 600 pounds of supplies and goods. These supplies are expected to arrive on Feb. 11th. Calendar Activities for WHES include the Jan. 14th Cookie Dough Sale Assembly and Jan. 18th Behavior Assembly for PBS student prizes. There will be no school on Jan. 21st due to Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. On Jan. 24th, the Board of Education will hold a district safety meeting. On Jan. 24th, an informational meeting for the Washington trip will be held. Progress Reports for 6th graders will be sent home on Jan. 25th. On Jan 30th, there will be a skate party at Skate City. The goal is for 150 students to attend the skate party. The teacher with the most students attending can purchase 100 dollars worth of books. The teacher must be present to win. On Feb. 8th, progress reports will be sent home with all students. IV. The meeting was adjourned.
