Frances is a 15-year-old living in a small Tennessee town in 1925. Her father, who is president of the school board, hatches a plan to bring publicity to their town by arresting a local teacher and accusing him of teaching evolution. The result is a media circus that engulfs the town and threatens Frances’ relationship with her father.

Small Steps is not exactly a sequel to Holes, but it does continue the story of Armpit after Camp Green Lake.
