From the Nurse: We realize that sometimes students must receive medication at school. Please be aware that Colorado State law governs our medication policy. If your child must take medication during school hours, you must provide the following before we administer it: A written doctor’s order (including drug name, dose, time, duration of treatment, doctor’s and parent’s signature). This includes all over-the-counter medication. The only exception is cough drops and topical over-the-counter preparations such as sunscreen, diaper creams and ointments which may be given with written parent permission only if they are used as a preventive measure. These topical medications will be discontinued if the skin is broken, bleeding or a rash is present. The provider order may be faxed to the school by the physician. PLEASE NOTE: The pharmacy label applied to the medication bottle will not suffice for a doctor’s order. • Medication must be in the original container, complete with label. Medication cannot be given if it comes in a baggie, envelope, plain bottle, etc. The seal on over-the counter medication must be intact. • All medications must be kept in a locked cabinet in the health room. If a student must carry a medication on them such as an inhaler or Epi-Pen, the physician order must state this and the student must sign a self-carry contract. The right to self-carry a medication can be taken away by the school nurse if the student misuses the medication in any way. • The medications provided to the health room will not be available outside of school hours. If you have any questions about the medication policy, please contact your school nurse Just a quick reminder before the festivities begin:
Along with all the fun, classroom parties bring an increased risk of students who are severely allergic to certain foods (especially - but not limited to- peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, milk, soy, wheat...) coming into contact with foods which could lead to a life-threatening reaction, even if they do not ingest the food item.
Stetson is also a “Latex-Protected Environment” due to several latex allergic students and staff members. Exposure to latex balloons could potentially cause a life-threatening situation for these individuals.
Please keep this in mind when providing snacks or decorations to your child’s classroom. If you are unsure if your student’s classroom is affected, please check with the classroom teacher
or phone the health room at 495-5249.

District 49 Allergen Position Statement

Although Falcon School District 49 cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment for all individuals, reasonable precautions shall be taken to minimize the risk of exposure to
allergens that may induce a severe allergic reaction. Falcon School District 49 promotes “peanut/nut-protected” and “latex-protected”environments. Attempts to “ban” any allergen
within an environment may give students, parents, and staff a false sense of security. School district procedure addresses practices to minimize exposure to individual
allergens, recognize the symptoms of an allergic reaction, and respond to allergic reactions in an appropriate manner. Accommodations and modifications intended to minimize the risk
of exposure to allergens are determined on an individual basis. Collaboration between the student, parents, school nurse, school administration and staff members is imperative in severe
allergy management. A safe environment for all students and staff recognizes individual differences and adoption of realistic practices. As a learning environment, it is the goal of school district personnel to
facilitate students in developing self-advocacy skills and behaviors leading to life-long physical well-being
