Clubs & Activities

The following clubs are offered at Sand Creek High School and are open for everyone to get involved in.  If you think we should offer another club and would like to get it up and running please download the application and see Mr. Mahan, the Athletic/Activities Director.  Please see the cardinal bulletin boards around campus for information.

Amnesty
International

Amnesty International is an international group that monitors human rights around the world including the U.S.  It is not partisan to an country, political party or government system.  We only care about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights signed by many, many different countries through the United Nations.

When human rights abuses are reported, we take action in a number of ways.  In years past we have written hundreds of letters to public officials around the world.  We have led petition drives in the school and community.  Last year we went to a rally in Denver for Tibetan rights in China.  We’ve written holiday letters to political prisoners (non-violent people held in jail only for their political beliefs).  We went to hear the leader of Pennies for Peace speak and subsequently organized a fundraiser in SCHS that donated hundreds of dollars to build schools in needy countries in central Asia. We also watch movies and read articles together in order to educate ourselves.   In May 2007, we were named Amnesty International’s Student Group of the Month (featured in their monthly newsletter).

For more information about this club, you can contact Alejandra Laureano (12), our president, or Kristina Sherman (11), our vice president.   You can also look online at www.aiusa.org

Invisible Children

Lamya Joyce

Schools for Schools emerged out of our overarching goal to help children in northern Uganda receive a quality education. Over the past few years, we've done extensive research into the region's education system and seen the need to encourage academic excellence and leadership not only in students, but also on a much larger scale within the schools. Even the children who are able to actually go to school still face unfair limitations because of the poor condition of their classrooms.

Through the Schools for Schools program we are working to change that. By going to the root of the problem and improving education from the ground up, we are able to make a long-term change in the quality of education in the North....

Basically were trying to raise money for a school in Uganda. We do this through Various Fundraisers.

The Invisible Children meets up at the library after school at two till about three to join in on the cause, but for more information, and for a way to donate to the cause, please visit their website at http://www.invisiblechildren.com/

Mock Trial

Barbara Yaschik

Mock Trial is a competitive team that meats from November through mid-February. The Colorado Bar Association prepares a case packet with laws, evidence, defendant and witness statements. Each school prepares a defense and a prosecution. We need six attorneys and six witnesses per team. We can field as many teams as we have kids for. Sand Creek usually has two teams: one experienced and one inexperienced. Starting November first, Mock Trial will meet Monday through Thursday from 6 pm to 8 pm. The last two weeks of October Ms. Yaschik needs to meet with new people (never played and never took the class) Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:30. There is a regional competition Friday night and all Saturday the first or second week in February. The top 20% of the teams in the region qualify for the State tournament the first weekend in March. There are lettering criteria for A team members related to attendance and performance. Qualifying for state is an automatic letter for that team. Practices are in room 109, the regional competition is downtown at the courthouse, and the state tournament rotates between Boulder, Golden, Denver, and Colorado Springs.
