What is DIBELS? (K-5) Throughout the year you will hear your child’s teacher talk about DIBELS. This is an acronym for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. DIBELS are a series of short tests given to children in kindergarten through 5th grade to screen and monitor their progress in learning the necessary skills to become successful readers. As stated in the name of the assessment, DIBELS is an indicator not an authentic reading assessment. The skills tested in DIBELS provide teachers information on whether or not students possess the skills needed to read successfully. Many elementary schools in Colorado and the country are using DIBELS to meet the reading requirements of No Child Left Behind.

Literacy Assessments Throughout the school year, teachers at MRES are constantly assessing and analyzing students in the area of literacy. Your student’s teacher will be using a variety of assessments to track student growth in literacy and to ensure that the teaching that takes place in the classroom is relevant to the student’s literacy needs. Along with CSAP (Colorado Student Assessment Program), teachers will utilize a reading screener (DIBELS), an informal reading indicator (Fountas & Pinnell), and an online standardized test (Scantron) to gather data to help make informed educational and instructional decisions. The combination of all of these assessments will not only help the teacher gather data to determine whether or not a student is on grade level, but they will also help determine literacy instruction that each student needs. It is important to remember that teachers use a battery of assessments to determine a student’s reading level and achievement. If you would like to know more about how this data informs our teaching, feel free to contact your teacher or myself (Mr. Lehman). |

What is Scantron?(Gr. 3-5) Scantron is an online interactive reading comprehension assessment tool. It assesses students’ reading levels and helps teachers adjust instruction according to students’ needs. It monitors student reading progress within and across grade levels as well as identifies appropriate books for students based on a lexile (readability) scale. A lexile is a number indicating the readability level of a book or text. It is measured in terms of both vocabulary and sentence length. The lexile scale ranges from 100 to 1700. Text with higher lexiles will present a greater challenge, and text at lower lexiles will be easier to read. |
What is Fountas & Pinnell? (Gr. K-5) The Fountas & Pinell (F&P) Reading Assessment is an individually administered test designed to help determine a student's reading level and instructional needs. F&P allows teachers to:
