Due to our new facilities, this year we are able to celebrate the continuation of our 8th graders!  FMS's 8th Grade Continuation will be May 22 at 4:30 pm in the Stadium.  Parents and family members are welcome.  However, this is not a formal event, so purchasing special clothing is not required.  There will be no rescheduling due to inclement weather.  The Celebration Dance (for 8th graders only) will follow in the Commons from 6-8:00 pm.  A letter with details should have arrived in the mail to you the week of April 21.

A note from the nurse at FMS:

Spring has arrived and summer is not far behind!

Children are eager to ride bikes, skate, and skateboard.

I am providing the following statistics from the National Head Injury Foundation so you can help your child understand the importance of wearing a helmet.

  • 400,000 children are treated in emergency rooms annually.
  • More than 148,000 of the children seen in emergency rooms have a head injury.
  • In children under 16 years of age who are involved in bicycle crashes, there are approximately 400 deaths annually.
  • One study reports that 70% to 80% of deaths in bicycle accidents are caused by head injuries.
  • Another study reports that of the children who survive their bicycle crashes:

-1% were severely impaired and had to be institutionalized.

-Almost 33% were discharged but had persistent disabilities which required assistance in daily living.

-32% of children admitted experienced cognitive or behavioral changes.

·        Over 14% of children who are treated, return to the hospital with recurrent bicycle injuries.

·        Helmet use reduces the chance of head injury by 85%.

·        Risk of head injury is 6 ½ times greater without a helmet.

·        In 1987 dollars, costs related to bicycle mishaps are:

·        $135 million for inpatient care

·        $75 million for emergency room visits

·        The cost of life-time care for an individual with a severe head injury is estimated at $4.5 million.

Have a SAFE and happy spring and summer!

Ruth Rogerson RN, BSN

School Nurse
